Songs From A Room - Houston Press Review

First of all, we would like to thank Songs From a Room for inviting us to participate in this almost magical event, and a very special thanks to Heather Pray, since she was the organizer and curator, and the person who contacted us and gave us the chance to be part of the show. I don't think any of us expected what happened. Sharing the stage (or rather, the living room) with such talented artists was simply amazing. We are very grateful we were part of this.

The Houston Press wrote a really nice article about our acoustic set from last Saturday. They even posted a video of our full performance! You can read the article, and check our performance right here.

Zombie Invasion and The Watermarks

As some of you may know, we are playing a show in College Station this Saturday, our first show there. The occasion is the Thrill The World event, where they will attempt to beat the world record for most zombies dancing Michael Jackson's Thriller video sequence. We go on immediately after zombies from all over the world dance together. Scary, isn't it? But we're happy we're sharing the stage with our friends from The Live Lights!

The Watermarks Featured in the Cureconnections Newsletter and Playlist

A few weeks ago I read in one of the Google Alerts we get that someone mentioned us in a Cure forum. This could be a good and a bad thing, depending of what the person said, of course. So I went to investigate and it was good, actually very good. A few members of the forum started saying really good things about us, and suddenly the downloads of our EP Thoughts Like Bombs and the plays of our YouTube video for Fast Song started peaking. Oddly enough, most plays came from Germany, which is the home for CureConnections.com, the forum where we got mentioned. The fact our music was being appreciated from so far away was so cool that I had to sign up and become a member of this forum, and thank everyone who helped spread The Watermarks' name all over the world. From what I gather there's nothing but nice people at CureConnections.com, and now they have even featured us in their news letter that every member of the forum gets and added one of our songs to their playlist!

We would like to say "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!" to them. That's totally awesome!

We were interviewed recently by Headlinner.fm. In case you don't know what Headlinner.fm is, it's a very cool site that helps independent artists find and connect with more fans and other artists.

Open Song Project & Upcoming Shows

We are very excited to announce that The Watermarks have been booked on the Rock The Republic Festival in College Station! It will be the first time we play there so we have double the reasons to be excited. Additionally, we are playing a FREE show with a super cool line-up. Not too often do you get to see free shows like this, so you should try not to miss it. The FREE show is on August 20th at Mango's. For more info, go to pegstar.net.

It's been a really busy month for us with gigs and our personal jobs, but we haven't forgotten about the little project we have talked about on our Facebook Fanpage. This project will be called 'The Watermarks Open Song Project'. The main purpose of this project will be for our fans to witness our creative process in progress, something you don't get to see very often with us or any other band. You will be able to see how a very basic music idea with not much to it, becomes a good, well produced song. Every time we work on the song or add or change something there will be an update with the audio and a little explanation on what we did, and why we did it. You might even see some videos of us arguing in the studio! Of course, with every update made, if there's something you would like to say, you will be able to do so. You can leave opinions, comments, comparisons, or even ideas, if you like. Even though this project is not about The Watermarks writing a song with our fans, this feedback might affect the developing of the song immensely, hopefully in a good way, but we'll have to find this by ourselves. That's why we call this an experiment and why we are excited about pouring stuff in test tubes to see what happens. We hope you guys will learn something or get something out of this. We are probably going to learn something about ourselves as well, but in the end what will matter is that we all have fun doing this. Because we've been and will be really busy until the end of this month, we'll probably have to wait until next month to begin with this project, perhaps the first or second week of September. We'll keep you informed.

I just found out this really awesome review on the charity compilation where we have the honor to have one of our songs featured along with songs of other great bands, Southwest Of Never. Apparently, it's a review for (sic)magazine. Here's what "Indie Dad" had to say about us:

Fast Song World Premiere Music Video

Some of you might remember about 9 months ago we started talking about a music video we were going to try to do. We said "try" because we have no previous experience making a music video, but we thought we had a good enough idea. At the time, The Watermarks were Jason, Nick and myself . One day we locked ourselves up in our practice space and with the help from our friend Matt Warren using my shitty video camera we did multiple takes. All we had for lights was some weird red light that Nick brought (yes, we know, we know, red light shouldn't be used for video recording, but we didn't know back then). Then I started the difficult task of putting everything together. But not too long after we got distracted with shows and the addition of two new members, Jessica and Joe, to the Watermarks family. We've been really busy since then, working hard at trying to materialize this dream we have called music, so we never had the time to finish our little project. Until now...

Well, it's not that we have the time, but I just said "screw it" and decided to finish the video. I have no ideas how many hours I've worked on it this past week, dozens probably. I guess since our lineup has changed a bit, we shouldn't consider this the final video for this song. There is a chance we could re-shoot it (without a red light) with the help of a much more experienced person behind the camera, not that we were not satisfied with Matt's takes, but the truth is that he's not a filmmaker. The video editing will also be in hands of this person probably keeping the basic concept , and I bet lots of the edits too, because I've never cut this much video in my life. But it will be a much cleaner and better looking piece as a whole. Now, when will this be? We don't know, we have already lots a things going on, but hopefully this year.

In the mean time, please enjoy The Watermarks' first music video, and weather you like it or not, you must remember that it was done with love!

Wow, what a crazy and busy, but fun, weekend!

Friday: The night started with my bass amp blowing up, but it gave me a chance to dust off my old bass amp and bring him out of retirement. It felt good to break him out again. Lost my set of keys, but they somehow magically appeared in Jessica's purse the next morning. First show with Joe our new guitar player! It is a blast playing with him for sure, and we are super excited about this new line up! Good crowd at Mango's.

Saturday: Drive to Austin, talking about weiner poopies most of the way there, and head straight to Hole in the Wall. A VERY cool venue right by UT. We played with several great bands at the UT Back To School Fest. Wonderful time and a memorable show, despite all the technical problems! Lots of old and new friends, lots of fun, lots of Lone Star. Sunday: A Lazy drive back to Houston followed by Depeche Mode! Had passes to a 'meet and greet' before the show, never imagined hanging with those guys, but a 14 year old me in an alternate universe was having a heart attack at 8pm last night...not sure who the other people in this photo are, some Live Nation Folk...also not sure why Fletch is totally copying my "hand on hip" stance :)

We Are Looking For Another Member!

We are looking for a decent guitar player, preferably. If he/she can also sing it would be awesome, in fact it might be as or more important than mastering an instrument. It could be a keyboard player too, although "playing piano" is not a requirement, since the synthesizer lines are mostly very simple. Much more important would be to understand and know how to work with synthesizers, digital audio, VSTi's, and know how to tweak synths and soft-synths to create cool sounds/noise. On the same token, not being an expert or even knowing little about this doesn't mean we would not be interested, as this can be easily learned if the person is interested in learning.

A well rounded musician who can play guitar, bass, keys, and can sing would be ideal, but not a requirement. What it is a requirement is that this person must really dig our music, and is into the same kind of music we like, not just being familiar with our musical influences.

We think the right person could take us a step up, so we must make the right choice.

So we were just invited to open for Ghostland Observatory!

Not just one of our favorite bands, but also one of our favorite Texas bands.

The show is at Sam Houston Race Park on May 9th, hope you guys can make it out to this show. We are excited to be playing at a huge out door venue like this to kick off our summer! So get there early, bet on some horse races, watch us, then get destroyed by Ghostland.

We had a great time, and are very excited by how it is turning out so far! Thanks to Matt Warren for some awesome input and camera work!
